Review: Dell Computer E2414Hx 24.0-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor

In a variety of settings, I’ve started working with multiple monitors more regularly, and I’m finding myself rather addicted to it. Not too long ago, I decided, my blog cave needed a second monitor. However, it was something I wanted to do on a budget. I didn’t need a 4K quality monitor, just something to give me extra room to work with. What I settled on was the Dell E2414Hx 24 inch LED monitor.

Review: Amazon Basics Wireless Mouse with Nano Receiver (Black)

I recently picked up an Amazon Basics Wireless Mouse and wanted to do a quick review, and given how quick and easy it was to use, it will be a quick review, indeed. I primarily use this mouse with a MacBook Air Retina. While I’ve been very please with my introduction to the world of OS X, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to just using a touchpad, regardless of the operating system, and I wanted an affordable mouse with no extra bells and whistles.

Update on PARCC Calculator Policy

I’ve really made no secret of the fact that I have my doubts about the long term viability of the PARCC test. Some of the sample items that have been released to the public are so difficult that they border on downright unfair. During my final 5 years as a high school math teacher, the math team I coached finished as the top public high school in Illinois in the 2A division each year, and there are items that I’m certain most of my math team students would have been unable to successfully complete.

TI-84 Plus CE Announcement Tomorrow

UPDATE: I have posted my TI-84 Plus CE Review It’s been a couple of years since Texas Instruments has announced a significant change to one of their major graphing calculator product lines, the most recent being the addition of color to the TI-84 line with the TI-84 Plus C. Tomorrow morning, TI will officially break their silence on a big update to that same extremely popular line of calculators with a new 84, the TI-84 Plus CE.

OBi202 VOIP Review

Click here to get the OBi202 on Amazon with FREE shipping. The OBi202 allows free calls via Google Voice As my previous couple of posts have explained, I recently came up against the problem of having to choose between bad cell phone service in my home or bad service on my daily commute, depending on which provider I went with. The way I decided to remedy the problem was by porting my number to Google Voice.

Porting My Cell Number to Google Voice

Why You’d Want to Port Your Number to Google Voice As I described in my previous post, A Plan to Deal with Bad Cell Phone Reception, a new commute recently forced me to deal with the fact that there was no single cell phone provider that offered both good service at my house and on my daily drive to work. The solution I came up with was to use Google Voice in order to have Google ring both my cell phone and a new VOIP Obi 202 phone line simultaneously.

A Plan to Deal with Bad Cell Reception

As I mentioned in a recent post, about a month ago, I made a big career change. Consequently, I’ve gone from a daily commute of 15 minutes to one of 45 minutes. My biggest frustration with the longer drive? My cell phone reception along the interstate has been spotty at best. I left cell phone contracts over a year ago and made the jump to the MVNO Straight Talk when I purchased a Nexus 5.

Encountering a TI-Nspire Prototype 'In the Wild'

I need to preface this story by saying that this is something that happened over 6 months ago. I took the pictures at the time but started my online data science studies shortly thereafter and just never got around to writing the story, but it was such an unusual thing that probably once a month I’ve continued to think about writing it up. During my years of teaching at my school, I’ve been the guy who troubleshoots all of the graphing calculator problems for teachers and students alike.

Teaching the Hour of Code

My last day teaching in a high school classroom is this Friday. I’m not the kind to just mail it in on the last day, and yet, I don’t really want to go onto a new mathematical concept since a sub will be showing up Monday to deal with the aftermath from any absences or confusion from a Friday lesson. So what to do as a standalone lesson that is more of a supplement than core to the curriculum?

From Classroom Culture to Corporate Culture

If you’ve followed Tech Powered Math over the last year, you’ve probably suspected this day was coming. I’ve been pretty open about the fact that I’ve been exploring career options for some time now, first via some career coaching and over the last 6+ months by retraining via taking online courses (re)learning how to code. A couple of weeks ago, I accepted a new position that will take my career in a very different direction.
