The process of “jailbreaking” or “rooting” devices such as iPods, iPhones, Android phones, and PlayStations has become increasingly popular among the tech savvy because it allows users greater freedom to install apps and perform customizations normally available only to developers. The amount of time and the procedure the process requires can vary from hours sitting at a computer to seconds on a website.
Now comes word that hackers have found a way to jailbreak the Sony’s PS3 using something very familiar to Tech Powered Math readers–a TI-84+ (silver edition not required). Sad to say that you TI-83 users (even plus) are out of luck. This jailbreak requires a USB port, something not found prior to the 84.
Geek.com reports the hole in the PS3 code that allows this jailbreak was patched earlier this week, so if you want to use your TI-84 plus for this very unusual hack, you can read up on how to do it from brandonw.net. Updating your PS3 with a new game or by accessing PSN will block those jailbreaks for now, but it’s probably safe to say the hackers won’t rest until they find the next loophole.
