Top 10 Pi Day 2013 Stories From Around the Web

I decided not to write my own Pi Day post this year, but instead share some of the interesting stories from major news outlets. After all, I’m not likely to beat the quality of a story from USA Today, CNN, or the Huffington Post, so here are 10 of the best that I found. 1. Rumor Mill: College Board to Change the Rules of the Game

On the verge of College Board approval? It’s certainly a stretch to call what I do on Tech Powered Math journalism. However, whatever journalistic instincts that have developed in me in nearly three years of writing at Tech Powered Math have taught me that a great place to look for stories at conferences is among the exhibitors. On the exhibit floor, you can find new products, new textbooks, and interesting rumors.

T3 Day 3 Roundup: See You in Vegas

My day 3 roundup has been delayed by travel back home and the news that my basement was rapidly taking on water from the flooding that has hit central Illinois the while I was gone. So as I write this, I’m comfortably in my living room, making the occasional uncomfortable trip down to my basement office to vacuum water out of my office carpet. Such is the glamorous life of an educational technology blogger.

T3 Day 2 Roundup: Mayim, the Marriott, and the Market

My day two here in Philadelphia was jam packed with sessions, so much so that it feels really good to just hunker down in my room long enough to get a post up. The day kicked off with a session from the always entertaining TI-Nspire expert Tom Reardon. TI spokesperson and Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik was active throughout the conference today, and she made a “surprise” appearance at this session to present with Reardon.

T3 Coverage and TI-Nspire App Sale

The T3 conference is hitting Philadelphia this week, and I’ll be fortunate enough to be in attendance. Texas Instruments’ annual showcase of technology and teaching runs Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10. Of course, they’ll be plenty of talk about the new TI-84+ C color graphing calculator (look for my review coming soon), and the just released TI-Nspire iPad app (review). As part of their promotion, Texas Instruments is slashing the price on the iPad app from its normal $29.

Color Craze Continues: New Casio ClassPad fx-CP400

Casio’s fx-CP400 Yesterday, Casio made a big announcement that it was continuing a trend of upgrading an existing graphing calculator line to color with a new ClassPad model. The Casio ClassPad 330 will no longer be the premier (and only) touchscreen graphing calculator on the market. A new model, the fx-CP400, will take its place at the top of the touchscreen hill. The color calculator trend is one that Casio kicked off two years ago when the Prizm was announced, moving beyond their fx-9860 GII.

Color TI-84 Plus C Reported: Hoax or Fact?

Far from a hoax, the TI-84 Plus C is a real calculator. Check out my TI-84 Plus CE Review.   UPDATE: 11:55 a.m. I have been contacted by a source who has worked for Texas Instruments and has asked to remain anonymous. He has provided credible information that the TI-84+ C Silver Edition is, in fact, a real calculator in development by Texas Instruments. You can see the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition information request form here.

TI Points Earn a Free Navigator System

For those of you that are teachers, I wanted to make you aware that Texas Instruments has a special promotion going on right now that allows schools to earn a free wireless Navigator system. By collecting 60 of the cards that come in a TI-Nspire CX or TI-Nspire CX CAS package, you can get a free Navigator. You need to collect the entire card, not just the “TI points.” The program runs until November 15, 2012, and does require some online Navigator training (see this PDF on the TI website for more details).
