Thoughts on “The Problem We All Live With”

As the the one year anniversary of Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO, This American Life has completed a very thought provoking two part series on the state of school desegregation both in the St. Louis area specifically and the United States as a whole. If you haven’t caught these segments yet, I’d strongly encourage you to take a listen. They are both highly entertaining and incredibly informative whether you are the parent of a child on one side of a racially divided school or just a citizen interested in better understanding the challenges our educators face today.

An Examination of Graphing Calculator Prices on Amazon

If you’re like me, you’ve noticed that prices on Amazon seem less stable than those in brick and mortar stores. There have been times I’ve visited Amazon for a specific product, noted the price, and when I checked back in two days later, the price had changed significantly. Check again a week later, and it’s different still. Until recently, this was just anecdotal for me. I wasn’t sure if what I thought was true was really true.

Video of the First Solid State Calculator

I wish I could take credit for the amazing video that follows, but I can’t, so I just want to share it with everyone that follows Tech Powered Math. It’s from the YouTube channel TanRu Nomad, a great channel I’ve been subbed to for a while that covers retro games and computers. The video shows off a Friden EC 130 Calculator, the world’s first solid state calculator. There’s nothing I can say that can better explain or build on this video, so please watch and enjoy.

An Alternative to the 4-Year Plan

Just a quick anecdote I wanted to share. A few weeks back, I was at possibly the last graduation party I’ll ever be invited to as a teacher of a former student. It was a great experience speaking with the recent grad and her friends, many of them also former students of mine, as the conversation was more relaxed and open than it typically is between teachers and students. As the conversation shifted to future plans, some of the students who are recent plans started sharing what universities they are headed off to and what they plan to major in.

Cost of College Infographic

If you’re a current college student, this infographic about the rapid rise in the cost of college will come as no surprise to you. However, if you’re in your mid-30’s and have kids like me, you may be shocked to learn how rapidly the cost of tuition, housing, and books has risen in the last 15 years, and how much parents of young children need to save for their kids’ education.

What to do if Windows doesn’t recognize your TI-84 Plus CE

I took the new TI-Connect for a spin tonight, and it is a big improvement over the old version. It’s faster, the UI is much easier to work with, and one could easily program from within it. However, I ran into a speed bump when I got started. My Windows 7 machine wouldn’t recognize my TI-84 Plus CE. I’m not sure if this a fluke, specific to my PC, something to do with the new Connect, or if there is some other explanation.

Some TI-84 Plus CE Launch Models Will Require Immediate Upgrade

UPDATE (5/7/2015): Texas Instruments has released the new version of their TI-84 Plus CE operating system, version 5.0.1.0012. It can be downloaded from education.ti.com. You’ll also need the new version of TI-Connect. If you run into any problems on the upgrade, TI customer support can help you out at 1-800-TI-CARES. Tomorrow, you’ll be able to read my review of the new TI-84 Plus CE. Prior to that, I wanted to share some of the latest information I’ve received about that model from Dale Philbrick, Director of Professional Development, Content and Systemic Programs for Texas Instruments.

The Evolving TI-84 Plus Platform

With a platform that’s been around as long as the TI-84, which is in and of itself the evolution of the TI-83 (launched in 1996), we’re bound to see models come and go. On Texas Instruments’ official website, I’ve noticed that certain models related to the TI-84 Plus were no longer featured. It also appears that some are starting to become less plentiful for purchase online. I hadn’t noticed anything about this officially announced, so when I spoke with Dale Philbrick, Director of Professional Development, Content and Systemic Programs for Texas Instruments last week, I asked what he could tell me about that.

TI-84 Plus CE Week

It’s TI-84 Plus CE week here at Tech Powered Math. I’ve had a couple of weeks to interact with the new TI-84 Plus CE. I also recently had a nice informational chat with Texas Instruments’ reps about some TI-84 Plus CE news and how the TI-84 product line is evolving. All that added up to more than I felt could be covered a single post, so I’ll be handling it in a three part series I’ll be rolling out over the next few days.

Texas Instruments Launches STEM Behind Health

It recently came to my attention that Texas Instruments launched a new initiative called STEM Behind Health. STEM Behind Health is designed to get students excited about health related careers. Activities from the initiative include a TI-Nspire document file as well as student worksheets and teacher notes. They were developed in conjunction with health care professionals and follow real patients and their health conditions. The first released activity is “Chelcie’s Story.
