NASA and Texas Instruments Team Up for STEM Education

Today, Texas Instruments announced a new partnership with NASA for STEM education that they are calling mISSion imaginaTIon. The new initiative launched with an online quiz about manned space missions, and there will soon be TI-Nspire activities with mISSion imaginaTIon. A year long STEM design challenge encourages students to work on four space-related challenges, and the winner will receive a video chat with a NASA expert and a TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator.

Farewell to Zite

Tonight, I Shed a Tear for the Passing of My Most Used App Today, Flipboard followed through on its stated timeline and threw the kill switch on Zite. While not the most well-known of the news aggregators, Zite was certainly one of the most beloved by those who used it (see Garner, Jennifer). Sadly for its fans, Flipboard acquired Zite in the Spring of 2014. “The sooner Zite goes away, the better,” said Zite CEO Mark Johnson.

Nexus 5X Review

After two mostly great years with the original Nexus 5, I’ve taken the plunge and picked up a Nexus 5X. I enjoy the Nexus line because I love the customization and affordability of Android, but with Nexus, I’m less beholden to carriers when it comes to bloatware on the phone and waiting for the latest version of Android to be available for my phone. Like many Nexus owners, I decided to take a pass with last year’s Nexus 6 due to the cost and large size.

Hour of Code 2015

We are just a couple of weeks away from the 2015 Hour of Code. Last year, I did the Hour of Code with all of my students on my last day as a teacher after 13 years in the classroom, and they loved it. If you are a math, science, or computer teacher, or are a parent looking to give your child a start on a new set of skills, you owe it to yourself to check out the Hour of Code website.

12 Math Gifts for 2015

Every year around this time, I enjoy putting together a series of recommendations of math gifts. As my kids are getting old enough to appreciate some of these gifts, I can now put together this list not only from the perspective of a teacher, but a parent. These math gifts vary in age appropriateness from young children to adults. They fall into the following categories: math games, math books, math novelty gifts, and electronic devices that can be used to encourage math learning.

Why You Should Attend a Texas Instruments T3 Webinar

My wife was good enough to pick up extra bed time duty with our kids tonight so I could take in the latest Texas Instruments T3 webinar, Behind Health with TI Technology. As is always the case with these webinars, the content was excellent, incorporating interdisciplinary content from science and statistics. This particular webinar focused on TI’s Stem Behind Health, which I talked about more in a previous post. The content in their latest module focuses on breast cancer.

Dell I7352-3111SLV Review

Image: BestBuy.com A few weeks ago, I had a bad experience with a member of the Lenovo Yoga 3 family. That left me on the verge of considering my first ever Mac for home use. After pricing Macs, I doubled down instead a picked up a Dell Inspiron I7352-3111SLV from BestBuy.com. As is often the case when I get my hands on a new electronics product, I thought I’d do a review of this PC for Tech Powered Math.

Lenovo Yoga 3 11.6″ Review

A little less than a month ago, I picked up a Lenovo Yoga 3 11.6″ 2 in 1 tablet from Best Buy. Unfortunately, this past weekend, I felt compelled to return it out of disappointment. Consequently, this will be one of the shorter reviews I’ve written. I had high hopes for this tablet. My brother has an entry level Yoga 2 tablet, and based on his experience and many positive reviews I had read, I was ready to jump in with the unique Yoga form factor.
