NxtApp 4 Kids

Devices: iPad, iPhone Grades: Elementary Cost: $.99 After recently reviewing NxtApp for the iPad, I wanted to give another app by Icon a try, NxtApp 4 Kids. NxtApp 4 Kids was actually their first app, which has turned out to be very popular. It’s easy to see why it’s a hit. The same game play I enjoyed on NxtApp is featured on NxtApp 4 Kids, but with a few differences that make it more age appropriate for younger kids.

Desmos Online Graphing Calculator Gets Upgrade

It’s been a couple of months since my original review of the Desmos graphing calculator. Desmos CEO Eli Luberoff was dropped me a line to let me know that his team has been hard at work, adding many of the features I was hopeful would show up soon after I wrote my original review. The calculator is so chocked full of features now that it’s honestly hard to keep track of which ones showed up when, so my apologies to the Desmos team if anything I mention was available prior to these latest upgrades.

World’s Largest Proof Wins Prize

I need to start this story with a disclaimer. While I learned a bit about groups during my abstract algebra class in my junior year of college, that class was definitely very abstract to me. In other words, I’m unlikely to be able to answer any questions in the comments for this one. That said, the story of one of the men behind the world’s largest proof on the New Scientist is an interesting one.

Doceri App

Device: iPad Cost: Free App, $50 for software license for computer Grade Level: Any, app is designed for teachers This year, my school finally equipped my room with a Smart Board. As such, my interest in virtual whiteboards in education has increased quite a bit, so has my curiosity about alternatives. One such alternative is the Doceri app for the iPad. Essentially, Doceri turns your iPad into a remote screen for your computer.

NxtApp for iPad Review

Devices: iPad, iPhone Cost: $.99 Grade Level: Upper elementary through high school Here’s a simple but surprisingly fun app. NxtApp is aptly named. Your job is simply to solve the next number in a sequence of numbers. The app classifies the sequences as Add or Subtract, Multiply or Divide, Powers, and combinations of the previous categories. As a Pre-Calculus teacher, I feel like my students should be pretty comfortable with concepts like arithmetic and geometric sequences as well as simple sequences generated by quadratic equations before they ever make it to my class (at least informally).

TI-Nspire OS 3.1 Released

Just got off the phone with a customer service representative at Texas Instruments headquarters in Dallas. I was trying to get help for a problem with press-to-test mode that’s plagued several of my students’ calculators already this year. Basically, taking the calculator out of press-to-test mode can, in some cases, cause a bootup error (you will know it if you see it by a triangle with an exclamation point). I’ve seen this happen three times so far this school year, always to older grayscale Nspires on OS 3.

ScreenChomp App

Device: iPad Grades: Elementary and up, especially targeted at teachers Cost: Free Here’s an app I got really excited about when I first realized what it was capable of. ScreenChomp is a very simple concept that’s actually quite powerful. It turns your iPad into a digital whiteboard, capable of recording not just what you draw on the iPad, but also the audio of what you are saying. While that’s nice enough, it’s what you can do with the video that’s very exciting.
