Casio Prizm Workshop in Chicago-land

While Texas Instruments’ T3 workshops tend to get a lot of publicity, if you are a teacher using Casio products, you should know that the Casio team is also striving to provide professional development opportunities for teachers. In particular, they are working towards helping teachers learn how to teach with the Casio Prizm (review) color graphing calculator. If you are in the Midwest and use Casio products, you should consider signing up for a Prizm workshop being held on December 10, 2011, from 8:30-11:30 a.

Texas Instruments T3 Registration Opens

Texas Instruments has opened registration for their annual T3 International Conference. The conference dates are March 2-March 4, 2012. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. T3 conferences feature professional development on the latest Texas Instruments technology from the TI-Nspire CX to the TI-Voyage 200. Having attended the T3 International Conference back in 2007, I can tell you that it’s a first class event. You get to hear from world class speakers, who share all kinds of ideas about how to utilize technology in the classroom.

Red Ribbon Week TI-Nspire Door

So if you haven’t heard, it’s Red Ribbon Week, which is a time for students to celebrate a drug free lifestyle. It’s observed at many high schools across America, including the one I work at. For 2011, the theme of Red Ribbon is “Free to Be Drug Free.” Part of Red Ribbon Week at our school is a door decorating contest. With no prompting from me, my 5th hour Pre-Calculus class decided to turn the door into a TI-Nspire CX.

TI-Nspire Trig Formulas Document

The first formula sheet document I am releasing for the TI-Nspire is one for trigonometry formulas. There are quite a few trig identities for students to memorize, so I hope this will serve as a good reference for you. This file will work for any up-to-date version of the TI-Nspire, including CAS or non-CAS, CX or grayscale. The table of contents follows below. TI-Nspire Formula Documents

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be releasing a series of TI-Nspire formula “cheat sheets.” Of course, cheat sheet is just a nickname for this kind of document, don’t actually use them to cheat. Having the formulas on your graphing calculator can serve as a very valuable study guide when you are either trying to memorize the formulas or to use as a reference when working on practice problems.

With that in mind, Motorola has released the Motorola Xoom Family Edition.

iOS 5 Review

I was among the thousands that found it extremely difficult to update my iPad to iOS 5. There was a time last Friday when it was basically a coaster. After struggling with it for a few hours, I was able to make the upgrade work, and it is a nice improvement. I wanted to get up a quick post to highlight a few of the features I’m enjoying. Having been an Android user for a couple of years, I am a little surprised how long it took for iOS to get some of the features it now has in version 5.

iOS 5 Crash and Burn

I expected to have a post up by now reveling in the glory of iOS 5 for my iPad, since it appears to have some features that would be pretty darn nice for both students and teachers. Unfortunately, my iOS 5 upgrade has been a major fail to this point. After hours of downloading, iTunes succeeded in wiping iOS 4 right off of my iPad 2 and promptly crashing it, meaning I had absolutely nothing on the iPad.

A Sad Farewell to Steve Jobs

I was sitting in a church meeting on Wednesday night when I received a jarring text from my wife with the news that Apple founder Steve Jobs had died. From a 3rd grader using an Apple IIe to a teacher using an iPad 2, the company Jobs founded has had a profound impact on my educational experience. While I’m not an Apple fanboy, I am certainly an Apple admirer, and I have especially admired what Jobs did with with his time at Apple.

Textbooks on iPad

More and more schools are looking at adopting the iPad. College students are using the tablet as a device that can bring together gaming, social, and academics. Teachers are picking them up as device that’s simpler to transport to and from school than a laptop. With the iPad increasingly being seen as a technology that fits well with academics, the question naturally turns to the question of textbooks on the iPad.
