A “Christmath” Miracle

Jimmy Stewart has nothing on my 4th hour calculus class. Every year at my school the math department does a canned food drive to get food for the local food pantry in our town. It’s become a really big deal; we’ve been told it provides enough food to stock the pantry for several months. As an incentive to the students, we offer them a little extra credit for the first 15 cans they bring in (5 points, which translates to roughly a 1% bump in their grade).

Top 6 Texas Instruments Calculator Hacks of All Time

UPDATE: A couple of days after this post originally went up, I was made aware of a new hack that deserved inclusion on this list, expanding it to a top 6. Probably every single student (and just about every teacher) who has picked up a graphing calculator has asked themselves how far the technology can be pushed. What are the limits of a graphing calculator? Without much encouragement from Texas Instruments (actually quite the opposite), a dedicated hacker community has developed over the last few decades to attempt to answer this question.

Reflex Math Review

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been looking at a system called Reflex Math, designed to help kids learn arithmetic facts. The stated goal of Reflex Math is to gain “math fact fluency.” Reflex is designed to help students achieve fluency through an interactive system of games and puzzles. Egyptian Conniption Reflex is a cloud based system, meaning there’s nothing to download to your computer. As long as you have an up-to-date browser, Reflex runs right in that browser.

Big Kid Life Fire Fighter App Review

Devices: iPad, iPhone Topics covered: Numbers, letters, shapes, and basic spelling and arithmetic Cost: $2.99 (but free for a limited time) Ages: 4-7 Big Kid Life Fire Fighter is the second app I’ve had a chance to look at by Fingerprint Digital, a new educational app company. Previously, I looked at Fingerprint Play Maker. Big Kid Fire Fighter is a very different app, and quite a bit more complex. Like other Fingerprint apps, you have the ability to check your child’s progress via the parent center at any time, and you and your child can send voice or text messages of encouragement back and forth.

Fingerprint Play Maker App Review

Devices: iPad Topics covered: Numbers, letters, shapes, and basic spelling and arithmetic Cost:[ $2.99 (but free for a limited time)][1] Ages: 4-8 A brand new app in the iOS Appstore that I’ve had the opportunity to take a look at over the last week is Play Maker, by Fingerprint. Fingerprint is a new player in the educational app market. They were founded former LeapFrog executive Nancy MacIntyre. Having had the chance to look at a couple of launch titles for Fingerprint, I’d have to say the thing that sets them apart from other apps I’ve looked at is the level of customization and interaction for parents.

Q & A With Fingerprint Digital Founder Nancy MacIntyre

This week a new app company, Fingerprint Digital, has gone public with a series of educational apps targeted towards children between the ages of 3 and 8. The company was founded by Nancy MacIntyre, a former Leapfrog executive who saw the opportunity to create a platform for a network of edutainment apps within iOS. Fingerprint is aiming to make a splash with the new apps by giving away $1,000,000 worth of downloads of their apps (valued at $2.

Have you ever looked for a simple way to track a flight someone you know is on? It’s not always as to find that in-flight data as you might think, particularly if you are looking for a way to do so on the go. The ever popular Wolfram Alpha has added flight data. With roughly a 10 minute data delay, you can see where any flight is currently located. The Wolfram Alpha blog has demonstrated both how this can be used for tracking the flights that you have friends, family, or colleagues on as well as used to track yourself in flight.
